Beginners information please

Post  wiseowl on Tue Jul 22, 2008 6:17 pm

This may sound very naive but I am coming back to fishing after a lay off of some 30 years. I have joined a local angling club with a superb lake but I do not know how deep it is. Can someone help me understand the method to use to determine depth. I prefer usually to leger but the locals tell me float fishing is better on this pond.

To check the depth with a float what you basically do is attach a plummet to the hook and swing the rig in to the area you'll be fishing. If the float goes under , you need to add some depth by sliding the float up the line. If the float lies flat on the surface you have got to much depth on so need to take some depth off. Keep doing this until the float sits perfectly and you have found the depth!
Hope this helps

Thank you very much, I know it was a silly beginners question but I will try it on Saturday. Only been twice in lat two weeks and feel maybe this week I'll be lucky. Thank you for taking the time.
